O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to the final 100th stage. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and bottom two, respectively. They were stunned by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil has been always delivering top performances since then, always finished in the top three. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September finals in 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
